Swimming burns calories and tones muscles without causing damage to your joints. Many neighborhoods provide community pools for residents. Also, many parks and recreation departments and community centers offer water aerobics classes.

Get Some At-Home Exercise Equipment

Stationary bikes, treadmills, and elliptical or stair-stepper machines are a great way to get a good aerobic workout in the privacy of your own home. You can purchase this type of equipment online or in resale stores. Many types of at-home exercise equipment can be folded up and stored in a closet or under the bed.

Do Exercise Videos

All types of exercise videos are available online and in discount stores, covering everything from step aerobics to yoga. These types of videos are also available for free in public libraries. Videos allow you to exercise in privacy whenever you have the time available. For additional motivation, you can ask a friend or family member to join you. Doing an exercise video in the morning gets your exercise done and out of the way and gives you more energy for the day ahead.

Bike For Fun & Transportation

When you need to run a quick errand, take your bicycle instead of your car. This is a great way to get your daily exercise, save money on gas, help the environment, and make a dent in your to-do list at the same time. If you live close enough, consider bicycling to work.

Spend More Time Walking

Walking is excellent overall exercise that requires no memberships or special equipment. It provides good cardiovascular and calorie-burning benefits. If you walk more every day, it can help you stay in shape. Take a walk around the block during your lunch hour. On the weekends when you have more time available, walk to your favorite stores to tone muscles and burn calories. Join a walking club if you want people to walk with to help you stay motivated, or look for a walking partner. On longer walks, try to accelerate your heart rate and keep it up for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Start Running

Like walking, running is something you can do nearly anywhere that requires no special equipment. It burns a lot of calories, builds great lower body muscles, and helps promote overall health. Most parks have running and jogging trails. Many high schools will let you use their track at no charge after hours. You can also run along the streets, but watch out for traffic and distracted drivers.
